Background of the Study

In rural areas like Bunkure Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State, energy access remains a critical factor influencing economic and social development. Traditional energy sources, including firewood and kerosene, are commonly used but are unsustainable and detrimental to both the environment and public health. In response to these challenges, bioenergy initiatives have emerged as an innovative solution to enhance energy access in rural areas. Bioenergy, derived from organic materials such as crop residues, animal waste, and forest biomass, presents a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to conventional energy sources. As a renewable energy source, bioenergy can play a crucial role in diversifying energy supply, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, and improving the livelihoods of rural populations (Eze, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of bioenergy initiatives on rural energy access in Bunkure LGA, specifically focusing on how these initiatives have contributed to meeting the energy needs of households and businesses. It will examine the adoption, implementation, and outcomes of bioenergy projects, identifying challenges and opportunities for scaling up such initiatives in rural communities. The study will also explore the extent to which bioenergy can contribute to rural economic development and improved quality of life.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of bioenergy to enhance energy access in rural areas, Bunkure LGA continues to face significant energy challenges. Many communities still rely on traditional, inefficient, and environmentally harmful energy sources. While bioenergy initiatives have been introduced, there is limited data on their effectiveness and impact in the local context. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating how bioenergy has influenced energy access in Bunkure LGA and identifying barriers to its successful adoption and implementation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of bioenergy initiatives on energy access in Bunkure LGA.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Bioenergy initiatives have significantly improved energy access in Bunkure LGA.

  2. The adoption and sustainability of bioenergy projects are influenced by factors such as awareness, government support, and technical capacity.

  3. Scaling up bioenergy initiatives in Bunkure LGA faces challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and community engagement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide valuable insights into the role of bioenergy in improving energy access in rural areas, particularly in Bunkure LGA. The findings will inform policymakers, development agencies, and energy providers on how to enhance the effectiveness of bioenergy initiatives and expand their reach. Additionally, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on renewable energy and sustainable development in rural Nigeria, providing a model for other rural communities facing similar energy access challenges.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on bioenergy initiatives implemented in Bunkure LGA and assess their impact over the last five years. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing remote communities, as well as challenges in obtaining accurate data on the adoption and sustainability of bioenergy projects.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Bioenergy: Renewable energy derived from organic materials such as plant matter, animal waste, and other biological sources.

  • Energy Access: The availability and affordability of energy for households and businesses.

  • Sustainability: The capacity of bioenergy initiatives to remain viable and effective over time, considering economic, social, and environmental factors.
